In this video, I will demonstrate how to make lava lamps using Alka-Seltzer tablets.
Materials
Clear Containers (I'm using stemless wine glasses)
Food coloring
Vegetable Oil
Measuring cup with a spout
Alka-Seltzer tablets
Water
A light source (I'm using flat solar lights.)
Cookie Sheet (Optional)
Plastic Table Cover (Optional)
Instructions
Put your containers on a cookie sheet to avoid big messes.
Fill your measuring cup with a half a cup of water.
Pour the water into you first container. Repeat for each container.
Now add food coloring into each container. I like to add 10 drops but have fun and experiment.
Swirl each container to mix the water and the food coloring.
Fill your measuring cup with 2 cup of vegetable oil.
Pour the oil into you first container. Repeat for each container.
Take out an Alka-Seltzer tablet. Ask an adult to cut one tablet into quarters.
Now the fun part. Drop one quarter of a tablet into the middle of each container. It will fizz and then create blobs.
Optional: Try putting the glass on the light source and turn off lights. It will look really neat.
After the tablet dissolve try it again. You can do this activity over and over in the same glass.
